NADH is a substance produced by the body that helps convert food into energy. Strictly speaking, NADH is an energy-supplying co-enzyme of the respiratory chain, which is also required for the breakdown of carbohydrates and alcohol, among other things. It can be produced in the body from niacin, nicotinamide (vitamin B3) and from breakdown products of the amino acid tryptophan.
NADH supplied from outside increases energy production in every cell of the body by reacting as a biological form of hydrogen (H) with oxygen (O) in the respiratory chain to form water (H2O). During this reaction, energy is produced in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The more NADH, the higher the ATP formation. NADH therefore ensures that the body's cells have more energy available and are therefore more efficient.
The cell uses ATP to produce all of the components essential for a cell to function optimally. These include components of the cell nucleus, the mitochondria (power plants of the cell) and the cell membrane. Therefore, NADH leads to an extension of the lifespan and vitality of cells, tissues and organs. Above all, the power plants of our cells, the mitochondria, play a crucial role in the regulation of cell division and the repair of damaged cells. If these mitochondria are defective, the cell dies.
