Does grated apple really help with diarrhea - sense or nonsense? 🍏🤔

through ANCENASAN Admin on May 13, 2025

Grated apple actually works better for diarrhea than an ungrated apple. The reason is chemical changes that have to do with this processing step and the ingredients.

🍎 Tannins (tannins): These have an astringent effect, i.e. they tighten the mucous membranes in the intestines. This means that less fluid is released into the intestines and diarrhea is reduced. By rubbing the apple, more oxygen reaches the enlarged surface, which allows the tannins to oxidize - these can now work even better and soothe the irritated intestinal mucosa.

🦠 Pectin: This soluble fiber binds water in the intestines and ensures a firmer stool consistency. Pectin also promotes the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria and helps to restore the balance of intestinal flora after diarrhea and a gastrointestinal infection. By rubbing, these tannins and also the pectin are released more easily and can have a more direct effect on the intestines.

Conclusion: A grated apple is not only easier to digest, but also develops its beneficial properties even more effectively.

By the way: Granny Smith apples contain more pectin than other types of apples...but unfortunately they are rarely available in organic quality.
