What causes gallstones?

through ANCENASAN Admin on August 11, 2025

➡️ About 80% of gallstones in developed countries are cholesterol stones.

This type of gallstone occurs when too much cholesterol builds up in bile and there are not enough other components, such as bile salts and phospholipids, to keep the cholesterol in solution.

👉 High cholesterol in bile can be caused by several factors:

1. Excess cholesterol in the liver:
If the liver produces more cholesterol than can be excreted into the intestines in bile, a buildup of cholesterol can occur.
Obesity, a low-fiber diet and the consumption of plenty of saturated fats and/or sugar promote increased cholesterol levels in the liver, which can later also rise in the blood. 🩸

2. Reduced Gallbladder Contraction:
When the gallbladder does not contract properly, bile is not released adequately and stagnates in the bladder. This makes it easier for cholesterol to form stones.
Stress - which is associated with increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system - long breaks between meals and too few bitter substances are among the main causes of inadequate contraction of the gallbladder and low flow of bile into the small intestine. 🪨

3. Changed composition of bile:
An imbalance in bile components can increase the likelihood of stone formation.
Stress, rapid weight loss and increased estrogen levels (e.g. in women) can adversely affect the composition of bile. 👎

Conclusion:
If you want to prevent gallstones, you would do well to take bitter substances regularly - especially during interval fasting or a fast lasting several days.
You should also try to reduce stress through exercise - and not through stress eating or sweets. Last but not least, the gallbladder is happy about more fiber and less saturated fatty acids, such as those found in: B. occur in butter, cream, sausage, fatty meat and cheese.
