Does coffee dehydrate us? 🤔☕💧

through ANCENASAN Admin on May 21, 2025

The short answer is: Not under normal circumstances!

Coffee does contain caffeine
, which has a diuretic effect because it increases blood flow to the kidneys and thus promotes the excretion of sodium and water. But since we don't consume pure caffeine, but rather coffee as a drink, the amount of liquid contained in coffee is sufficient to largely compensate for the loss caused.

With moderate daily amounts of 3-5 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight (equivalent to approx. 4 cups a day), studies have shown no negative effects on water balance.
📊 This means that overall there were no adverse changes in measured values that would indicate dehydration of the body, such as total body water content 💦, extracellular and intracellular water or osmolality = degree of concentration of urine.

However, if you drink very large amounts of coffee at once (approx. 6 cups of coffee or > 6 mg/kg body weight or approx. 640 mg of caffeine), increased fluid excretion occurs, at least in the short term (i.e. for several hours).
📈 The situation is similar for people who don't usually drink coffee. For them, the diuretic effect is always higher than for those who regularly sip coffee. 🥤 However, this diuretic effect disappears over time with regular consumption, i.e. the body adapts over time. 🕒😉
